Because he was so focused on hunting down people with abilities he missed an important meeting on medical advancements doomed to kill half the world's population.He sent an aide to vote in his place and the bill passed with the resulting organ failure being blamed on Nathan. His daughter Claire began sending him vials of blood once a month to keep him alive so he could see what his carelessness and hard heart had created and Nathan welcomes the punishment. He signs a long term contract with GeneCo as the handler of Rotti Largo and his children. Nathan willingly cleans up their messes, acts as their sexual slave and handles Largo's dirty work. To them he has no name and Nathan likes it that way. Nathan has three people in this world he would do anything for, Blind Mag, whom he protects whenever she requires it, Marni Wallace, who was the first person to call him by his given name and his brother/lover, Peter, who is a zydrate addict. Nathan sends his brother money when he needs it, watches over him and makes sure he is protected from afar. He also closely watches over the Wallaces, due to his deep love for Marni. He could have stopped her death, but chose to save his brother instead and once again he lost someone he loved over a choice. He died at the end of the Genetic Opera taking the first bullet meant for Nathan Wallace and at last considers his debt to Marni repaid. Nathan suffers from guilt and anger because of what he has done, but looks for no way to free himself.
